Why is my mower only running with choke wide open?

I cleaned the carburator on my 17.5 HP Briggs and Stratton engine, now it only runs with the choke wide open. How do I adjust the carb to make it run properly

A possible reason. Having had same problem, check that the connection cable to the float chamber has not come apart. There is a push fit connector, in my machine hidden within the cable shroud, which may have become detached if you have moved the cables around or pulled on them somehow. Worth a look.

I did make sure that it was connected properly a few times. It does smell like it is running rich, I tried to adjust it to make it run correctly.

Assuming you mean only runs with choke CLOSED (that is - choke 'on'), check that you have re-connected the electrical connector on the bottom of the carb float bowl.
