how to check and change my alloys?

hi im changing my 206 alloy wheels but how do i check that they are safe to drive on? and does it matter if they dont just fit on a stay there? because i started to change them but they just kept on dropping off while i got the nut, is this normal??

if their is a gap between the centre hub and your centre wheel edge you can buy nylon spacers from car shops
