had an ecu fitted the engine light still comes on - asked why mechanic told me ecu has no codes stored

Make/year/model of car?
Is it a brand new ECU or secondhand?
They usually have to be 'coded' to the car and security system using dealer-level diagnostics equipment, was this done?
How do you know the original ECU was at fault, did you send it for testing?
