what is the element for in a washing machine?

my washing machine trips the trip switch. the water fills in ok but when the cycle starts the trip goes. is it the element or motor? tina

It's a Heating Element - like in a kettle...

Elements are often the weakest link - your problem could be motor related but it's more likely to be the element - try it on a cold wash if you can - no trip = broken element.
