how can i fox my brakes?

i have a 1990 ford escort rs turbo when i brake there is a lot of play in the pedal i have to push the brakes hard to stop and the pedal does not return to its normal position very quickly if any one has got any idea please let me know e.g when pumping the brakes the pedal stays low instead of coming back up to be pumped again.thanks

Hi,i would be very carefull from what your saying sounds like it could be the master cylinder.
If it is could be very very dangerous you could loose all braking all of a sudden.
