Ford focus battery light stays on and whirling from engine?

I have a ford focus 1.8 tdci and this morning the engine was whirling on start up andwhile being driven and after 5 minutes into my journey the battery light came on and is now staying on. Any ideas pls..

hi there it sounds like your alternator what charges up your battery is faulty you will req a new alternator i'm afraid.
