how to going about fixing?

i have a vauxhall vectra b 2.2 sri 150bhp, recently the car has been idle in very rough and the car is now making tapping noises and when i put foot down on clutch it rev's up and now has started stalling randomly fuel is coming in so rich you can smell it. spent £150 getting diagnosed to only be told the engine is on the way out. freind said it could be a compression problem any advise wondering if i should look at putting a new engine in????

I'd be a bit annoyed if I spent that much money on diagnostics just to be told "it's on its way out".
Did he say what is actually wrong with it?
You dont say what year the car is or what condition it is in.
If it's good and you can do the work yourself or know someone who will do it on 'mates rates' then it could be worth repairing it, it depends on what is actually wrong.
If you need a replacement engine and will have to pay garage rates it's probably not worth it.
I imagine that, like most of us, you cant afford a brand new car even with the scrappage deals.
If it's in decent condition , MOT'd etc you might get a couple of hundred selling it on a 'spares or repair' basis, better than you'd get from the scrapyard.
I might have it myself if you're anywhere near Dundee!
