Briggs 19hp engine holed by conrod can it be repaired ?

I have a Briggs ohv single cylinder 19hp engine that has a inch square hole in the crankcase which was holed by the conrod when it let go. The engine can be repaired by grinding the crank and shelling etc and its quite a newish thing so its worth the exspense but does anyone have any tips for repairing the hole in the crank case. The crankcase is the type that is part of the cylinder so it would be far too exspensive to replace. Any advice greatly appreciated.

Hi
Thanks for that i was thinking along those lines and nice to confirm someone has actually made it work.
I will keep you posted but it might be a month or so has i have fitted a 13hp to the mower to get me to the end of the season so i am not in as much of a rush to repair now
Cheers James

I have previously repaired similar damage (own engine) by pop rivetting a suitable sized piece of ally. over it, with a good smearing of "instant gasket" to seal it. Of course, it depends where the damage is, as it may be difficult to shape the patch to a flush fit.
