Why is my Briggs and Stratton petrol mower taking chunks out of the grass?

The rotating blade is making contact with the ground. It is either set too low, has a bent blade or is not levelled and is set too low. You should be able to determine which by observation - as for the solution that will depend on the cause and the model of the mower.
