spark plug full of oil?

I`ve got a ford escort estate 1.6L 16V zetec engine. The engine is missing. I removed spark plugs to find No.1(nearest timing belt) saturated in oil. The others are ok (Gap & clean). A mate suggested seal on piston ring another the rocker gasket??
Any ideas and how much will it cost?
any help would be gratefully received.
Many Thanks

Get the cylinder compressions tested, or for a more accurate diagnosis, a 'leak down' test. This will tell you quickly if you have a wear problem.

If the plug was covered in oil externally - in the recessed tube in the cylinder head with the plug cap - then its the rocker gasket at fault. If the plug electrodes were saturated, then its a piston problem. Hope its the first!
