My power steering has gone stiff on my Astra?

noticed my power steering fluid on my Astra (its auto if that makes a difference) was low, topped it up and now the steering has gone stiff. Its as if the power steering isn't working. Does it need bleeding?

Don't know if this helps, but has battery light come on?
The power steering on my astra stopped working when the alternator packed in.
