How to access & clean filter on Mondeo (1996)?

My aircon is weak/poor and I would like to clean the filter on the intake as the first step, clean the heat exchanger too, as well as the condenser heat exchanger.

But it is very hard to work out how to access the filter. Car manual not helpful.

The pollen filter is at the base of the windscreen, passenger side...to access it, open bonnet, remove a couple of screws, lift clear the rubber strip and lift away the plastic cover. The filter is beneath this cover.
