What is the Earth wire? ?

What is the earth wire? Is that the ground wire? I guess I don't need a diagram, really. I just need to know what to do with it.

I am not overly concerned, but in the back of my mind I wonder if I might get electrocuted. Yikes!

Yes the earth wire is the ground wire and you will normally only get them on sewing machines with a metal motor or metal foot control, be aware that different countries may have a different colour coding.
