How can I reset my Baumatic dishwasher BDW13?

Error code E4 showing for overfill protection but no water in the tub. Caused by partial block of filter. How do you clear this error code and restart the machine.
David Griffiths, March 2006
Thanks guys -another happy Customer here. Michael in March 2008 had the tip that saved me. I'd already drained the water (caused by my accidentally unscrewing the filter capsule housing and not properly reseating it) and dried out the machine. However the E4 code wouldn't shift when I turned the machine back on and the pump kept running. Like Michael says, holding down the programme button and pressing the on off button 5 or 6 times cleared it. Dishwasher now running happily in the background! One thought that others have mentioned - if the sump is regularly filling up giving you E4s then you need to identify and fix the source of the leak or it will just keep happening! Thanks again for all the help.

Mike, December 2016
Excellent info thanks to all of you! After draining all the water out (on the floor) pulled a few things apart looked at the motor and running gear with great intensity and rocked it a bit, put it all back together and hey presto it goes! However I will tell the wife I pulled the motor out and soldered a few things and she will think I'm marvellous!

Steve, September 2014
Thanks all. I just tried giving it a thump near the salt dispenser to clear an E4 on a BD13 and away it went.

Les, November 2013
Think I should mention... It's ok mopping up water and getting machine working again. But you should determine how the water got there, or it will happen again. The usuale cause is the plastic nut on the salt dispenser coming loose, then letting water through. Hope this help you folks

bubblenskweak, September 2013
Hi I have a Baumatic dishwasher BAD6002, Error code E4, I checked the manual and it said it was a water blockage, so i checked all hoses, to find that the water drain pipe had harden lard like substance stuck in it. I cleaned it out and the filters and drained all the water from inside the dishwasher. Error code wouldn't stop. I read your post and thought it sounds pretty easy, but no women had done it, I thought I'm going to be the first one. I turned it up side down with the help from my son onto a blanket, there was no black panels as you suggested. However lots of water poured out, I left it on its side for twenty minutes. Then put back all the hoses and plugged it in, it works and the code is gone. Im so happy as I couldnt afford a new one or getting a maintanance man out.

Diane Roberts, September 2013
Thanks for the tip, I was able to fix the dishwasher without waiting for the engineer to arrive days later!

Steve, September 2013
Stefan's suggestion of drying out the sump still worked beautifully today - the most difficult part was removing the kickboard!! Many thanks, and what a helpful website

Nic Neal, April 2013
had e4 come up on display , took 2 black panels of the bottom of the machine , it was full of water , mopped it all up .... result , machine working fine .... MANY THANKS

MR MAGOO, March 2013
Many thanks for the very helpful tips it worked perfectly on my Baumatic BWD1631 integrated dishwasher which had the normal and economy wash lights flashing and wouldnt work. I am a disabled pensioner and it saved me some much needed dosh

William Smyth, February 2013
I'm not usually one to add comments, but am so impressed with the results from the steps suggested here.

I managed to block my filter by leaving paper in there when running a load (oops)

I did the following:

1) Cleaned out the filters

2) Drained the salt resevoir using a tea-towel

3) Removed the black plates and drained out all water in the sump, dried it as much as I could

4) Poked at the safety switch in the sump with the polystyrene floater / micro-switch, making sure it was down

5) Tilted the machine backward and forward (be rough, you have nothing to lose!)

Hey presto, a miracle.... It's working now!!!

Thank you all so much for the advice... I was dreading an engineer call-out.

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again! I tried the above a few times before it worked. But wow it's satisfying to fix your own dishwasher!

Rob Hillary, March 2012
Brilliant tip. It worked on my BDW 45.1 showing an E45 code. It appears that it after TURNING OFF THE POWER and popping the 2 black panels under door, if there is any water to be felt, then it needs to be dried out with a cloth. Just to the left of the middle, mine has a small white plastic pot which has a float switch to sense water in the bottom. Before soaking up the water, lightly press on the float arm to make sure that it is moving and not stuck in the up position. When you have soaked up the water, you will see that it is now lower and resting down. I hope this helps.

David, February 2012
my washer has not been filling either,i cleaned all inside the washer was a bit smelly too. but this morning i removed the black panals wiped inside with a dry cloth, dried the inside of the washer, smacked the salt holder lid then my lovely washer worked. amazing thank-you thought i was gonna get a £100 bill

SONIA SENIOR JAN 2012, January 2012
i had overfill fault did as everyone as done and fault code disappeared but machine still doesnt work at first salt display came up filled with salt but still wont operate any ideas

Baumatic BDW13 Starts Cycle but does not spray any water - continues on cycle until complete without cleaning

Kevin J W, December 2011
Hello everyone, good to see so much consistent advice about emptying the sump via the black panels.

I also have an E4 problem with a fitted Baumatic dishwasher, but mine is a BDI652. Given they change model numbers relatively frequently (and possibly between countries - I'm in the UK), I thought I'd try to see if this method was applicable for mine. I removed the fitted kitchen kickboard and sure enough, two black plastic panels!

Unfortunately when I removed them, they seem to have some black fabric (maybe felt) padding - possibly insulation - behind them. Anyway, I can't obviously get access to the bottom of the machine this way to drain it. Can anybody advise if they've had a similar situation, or alternatively if there is a different solution for a BDI652? Given it is fitted, I'd only want to remove the whole thing as a last resort.

Thanks

Ken, October 2011
Cant thank all you posters enough. After punching and kicking it and that not working, i read this page and saved myself tons of wonga. Be proud people!!!!!

Rich Stanton, September 2011
this works first class thanks i saved a small fortune

Gil Rea, August 2011
Thanks again. I removed the black panels and dried the base of the machine and all was well. A few months ago, a thump on the base near the salt dispenser did the trick but this 'cure' didn't last. Maybe go for the black panels first.

John Wilson, July 2011
Thanks - switched it off at the mains, removed the black panels below the door, dried inside and it worked immediately.

Jason, June 2011
Guys, this worked for me, just take off the 2 black panels at the bottom under the bottom of the door and wipe with a cloth!!! AMAZING THANKS SO MUCH

Patrickh, May 2011
Wow, what a fantastic fix - brilliant. From someone whom forum answers don't usually work. Thanks!!

Roger, May 2011
Thanks to this site, a couple of hard thumps on the bottom of the machine near the salt container and filters cured the problem on my BDW13 machine.

John Wilson, May 2011
Thank you everyone - a fantastic fix to an irritating problem. Tried emptying salt compartment and filter to no avail, but popping the black plastic panels and a wipe inside solved the problem. Thanks!

Ben, March 2011
cuisuina dishwasher DW007 is showing E4 fault we had water all over the floor can you help? Looked at hose doesnt seem to have anything wrong with that.

Spike, March 2011
My machine must be very old given it by a friend. It didnt
have any black plastic covered compartments. Soaked all
the water out of salt filler to no avail. Bless the man who
said he gave the machine a good thump! I pulled it out tipped it gave it a good shake - water all over the floor but
machine works .

kate jones, January 2011
I followed Stefan's advice - brilliant! All fixed, or nearly - I now have to call Baumatic again (spent several minutes waiting to be answered last time) and cancel the engineer. They charge £89 plus VAT, take the money in advance and don't even give you a date for the visit. Wish I'd found this website first.... Bravo, Stefan - my hero.

MJ, December 2010
Another succesful reader. Pity Baumatic do not put this in their user manuals but hey, they are probably making lots of money from selling their home serve warranties.

darrell, December 2010
Yes !! it worked, took off front left plastic cover and wiped out the water, hey presto! it reset

Thanks a stack

Mike, November 2010
Great advice stefan ta. Worked perfectly. if having difficulty with black panels try and lever bottom two inserts with small screwdrivers at same time. They came out like a dream.

Peter, August 2010
hello thanks to you all had the same code on e4 googled it came up with this site it worked a treat safed me a packed thanks

marian, July 2010
I had the problem of error-4 on my dish washer baumatic BDS64SS and when enquired with supplier here at NZ,said i need service tech and i accedentially came across this blog when i googled my problem fantastic answers everyone, helped me a lot to know my machine better and fixed up by problem by just tilting my machine and removing excess water which spilled on the floor.Thank you all for your feedbacks it saves time and money.

jaynagta, May 2010
Thanks everyone! I found this site just two down on google from one telling me they could fix my dishwasher for £117... It was dead easy and my husband thinks I'm great.

Lucille, May 2010
took two black covers off dried off with small sponge now two error codes lights have cleared and working great, you topmen! thanx!!

goochy., May 2010
I have a BDW001SS and this worked for me. Thank you very much.
Just popped off the front black covers at the bottom and used a towel to soak the water up.
There is a float and micro switch used to detect an over flow, it is easy to see once the covers are popped off. Once I had removed enough water it did not click after pushing the float down, i.e. the float did not come back up and trip the micro switch. I wouldn't have had a clue where to look if it wasn't for this site.

Thanks again.

Gary, May 2010
I've got a bdw15 and the same applies. Fantastic.

Robert, April 2010
Brilliant! Shake it, baby!! I couldn't get the black plastic plates off the front, so went with the other option of rocking the appliance back and forth... it's humming away in the background right now... Thanks one and all!

Miles, April 2010
Another possible cause of the e4 code, my bdw 13 had a leak caused by poor seating of the rear inlet filler pipe which feeds the top spinner, it was only a small drip but it was enough to fill the sump and cause the machine to keep tripping out, possibily damaged by too much force being used to close the top drawer. there are two rubber seals, one located on the end of the filler pipe where it enters the machine the other inside the nut which secures the filler pipe, look inside the machine at the back of the top tray, the seal inside the nut had perished and the screw thread on the upper inlet pipe had cracked. replacement parts can be obtained from baumatic cheaper than elsewhere on the internet and delivery is very quick. I had to take the back off machine to find this problem, if you do have to change the filler pipe you will also need a new 1" jubilee clip (hardware shop).

Alan, March 2010
hi one really quick way i did it but prob not recommended by manufacturer i shook the sh~t out of it which will make the water spill out then bobs your uncle working fine ! also works on bdw14

simon dhar, March 2010
My word this site has saved my sanity. Thanks stefan for fixing my dishwasher.

Kevin, March 2010
Thanks a million for the advice - removing the plates and sponging up the water worked a treat!

max, March 2010
Excellent post by Stefan, just had E4 error with my built in BDW13, taking the two black panels off and soaking up the excess water has done the trick and saved me the hassle of getting someone out etc..... (and the wife thinks i'm great!)

Mikey Mike, February 2010
Thanks a lot for the advice, machine is fixed. It's not very good of the Bomann to tell you WHAT the error code means - but not how to fix it!!!

Tom, February 2010
Thank you all for your help! 5 mins and I was sorted :)

Greg Jones, January 2010
thank you all for the err4 advice. i literally drained off the excess water and gave the rear a shunt and "bingo"

brian, December 2009
What a fantastic site!!! Same old problem, but a quick scan and the problem was identified. I used a long basting bulb to empty the filter drain and the Salt reserve, and BINGO all up and running again with NO water spillage!
Thanks a million everyone!

Simon, December 2009
Wow, thanks all. Husband has left me with 4 kids. Pride would not let me call him and couldnt afford to call engineer. All working great now.......who needs a men eh! (well except to post valuable answers on here!)

hi all
i read a lot of the posts before switching off the electric and then popping out the black covers at the bottom of the unit (behind the kick board). mopped up the excess water as suggested (more on the left hand side of the unit as you look at it) and then put it back on and it worked straight away. thank you so much for the advice, not only saved me the engineer call out fee but my good lady now thinks i am a genius!
thanks again to all who have contributed

My girlfriend and I (hetrosexuals) are very very pleased with ourselves as we fixed our own dishwasher. We couldn't get the dishwasher out, so we shook the door!!! This fixed it. :-) xx

Kirsty and Leanne, April 2009
I have a built in Parmco dishwasher. I fixed the E4 error by taking off the bottom kick board and plugging in a large fan blowing air under the dishwasher. I took a little longer but I didn't need to undo any screws.

Kiwi Ian, March 2009
Same trick worked od my Electrolux ESF 6241 - it had shown Error code 30. Works fine now, thanks

Gregor, March 2009
i have tried all of the replies, drained out the sump etc, at first the error message had gone, but has now reappeared, has any one else got any more ideas please

A Reed, February 2009
Tipped up forwards to empty water, mopped up. Works perfectly again!

Jon B, February 2009
FOLLOW TERRY'S ADVICE!

Read below and follow Terry's advice about draining the sump - behind the black plastic covers - had me back up and running in less than 5 minutes from the error appearing.

I used a sponge to soak up the water, squeezed it into a bowl and it's running right now.

THANK YOU TERRY - BRILLIANT!

Mat, January 2009
That was so cool Stefano. My husband was amazed it worked. We had an electrical outage and it caused the E4 Error to flash and the drainage pump to stay on constantly but a quick mop out of the sump tray at the base of the machine and a resetting of the sensor had it working in no time at all. €70 call out money saved. Thanks a million.

Ellen from ireland, January 2009
i read your repair hints and it worked for me i phoned baumatic who wanted 80 pound to send a engineer out all i did was tip it back! mine is adiffrent model than the others ine is bkd60ss it worked on this model too thanks

paul, January 2009
Mne was a integrated BW14, pulled it out, tipped it forward and drained out the water from the underpan(no access plugs on mine), power off/power on again.
Everything returned to normal and it sorted itself out.
water spillage minimal, good towel soaked it all up.
Many thanks to all

Gord8416, December 2008
I have recently had exactly the same issue with my BDW13 integral dishwasher.

Initially tried using a hand held syphon to remove the water via the salt dispenser, but did not cure the fault.

Ended up removing the dishwasher from the cupboard and tipped it forward. Quite a lot of water came out onto the floor. If we have not have used the syphon it would have been a lot more water.

However, the problem is now resolved as all the water is now out of the machine, thus reseting the water micro switch.

Small price to pay for having a functioning dishwasher - saved a packet on engineers fee's

Thanks to all

Ray Ward, November 2008
removed left panel and soaked the water at the bottom. removed the water from the salt compartment but still have problems. the machine resets when i do the above but when i start a wash program it gives me the E4 message after apprx 5 minutes. any idea what i can do next asive tried several times? thanks

darryl g, November 2008
Guys, thanks for the advice; had a non-start on Baumatic BDW8 (beeping and five cycle lights flashing). Popped off the two black plastic covers at the front base behind the plinth. Soaked up as much water as possible. Returned the black covers, emptied the salt container for good measure and hey-presto; I can take the marigolds off again. Many thanks for the advice.

Soft hands Pete, October 2008
removed the black plate at the left handside, as our machine is integrated. Dried it all up, it reset itself and works again...Thank you

Becky d, October 2008
I have a BDW4.5 and had the same problem (E4code). Just tilted it slightly forwards then backwards. Now it works perfectly again.

Doug, October 2008
Stefan's a dishwasher god. All fixed thanks to his help... took the black plates out, mopped up with a trusty towel, and who needs a cocktail stick when you have a bass playing husband with agile fingers? Thanks everyone - I HATE washing up and if we hadn't found this board we would have been facing a week of drudgery waiting for an engineer to come...

Linaloo, September 2008
Had the same E4 code on a BDW15 Dishwasher, took off the plastic panels behind the kick board at the front mopped up the water inside the machine re tripped the float device switch with a cocktail stick and hey presto one working dishwasher. You guys are the best, just saved myself £100 repair bill - God I love the internet!!!!

DIY SI, July 2008
Had the same E4 problem, popped the black panels off and mopped up a load of water, and now it works. Thanks to everybody on this board :)

Sam, July 2008
Superb, Thanks guys... Just had to tip the dishwasher up onto its back right corner and it works fine again!

Alan, June 2008
Have a baumatic BDW45.1. It is also fully integrated & so taking off the black panels under the plinth & mopping it really worked. Saved alot of bother & money. Thank you everybody.

Neil, May 2008
Worked for me as well on the BDW45.1

All I did was pull it out as rock it forwards and backwards. It works fine now! Thanks!

Tom, May 2008
I Have had exactly the same problem, i have mopped uo the water and reset the micro switch and error code 4 has now gone. Started the dishwasher after a few minutes into the cycle i am now getting an error code 1, ahhhh help

Ian, May 2008
followed what stefen liversage said, worked straight away!!! no need to reset just turn it off at mains, mop up excess watewr underneath dishwasher!!! turn it back on, worked straight away!!!

thankyou stefan, saved me call out fee!!!

Naomi, April 2008
dave your a genius...took the black panels off and used a small sponge to mop up the excess overflow water, took about 5mins and worked straight away...thanks I owe you a pint.

jez gooden, March 2008
Many thanks to Stefan Liversidge et al for expert guidance. Saved me £100's! After drying out my Baumatic BDW8 I had to hold down the programme button then at the same time rapidly press the on/off switch about six times to reset and restore functionality. Hope this works for you too.

Michael, March 2008
Yep. Well said Lorna. That's the answer.

I tried emptying the salt dispenser. That didn't work.

I then removed the 2 black panels and mopped up the water. Works again now. Baumatic quoted me £80 to come out and fix it!!

Done.

Victoria, March 2008
Thanks for the tip, I had an E4 code and I wasn't sure why. I removed the left hand side black panel and the bottom, quite tricky but with a bit of patience and a wiggle from a butter knife it pinged off. I stuck a towel in and mopped up the excess water. Turned the mains back on and now works like a dream. Thanks everyone.

Lorna

Lorna, December 2007
im an engineer. the machine (all dishwashers) is designed to flood themselves out.... many reasons for this. but obviously to flood they can cause electrical damage so.... on the base is a small round piece of white foam that is connected to a microswitch, cutting the power once the water rises too high protecting the electrics. try connecting a 2nd trap for drainage as you can get a backwash when emtying a sink full of water or another appliance drains at the same time. generally causing this issue with your dishwasher....

lee, November 2007
Definately water in the drip tray can't see any leaks either.
Strange how baumatic say you can't reset it you have to call their engineer out !!!

Barry, November 2007
E4 IS A OVERFILL CODE
CAUSED BY A WATER PRESSURE PROBLEM.
ENSURE THAT YOU USE GOOD QUALATY WASH TABS. ALSO INSURE THAT THE WATER PRESSURE IS NOT TO HIGH AND THAT THE DRAIN HOSE IS NOT TO FAR INTO YOUR DRAIN, IF THIS DOES NOT SOLE THIS PROBLEM THEN SUSSPECT A LEAK INSIDE YOUR MACHINE WHAT WILL HAPPEN IS THAT THE ANTI FLOOD SYSTEM WILL OPERATE AND THE DRAIN PUMP WILL DRAIN CONTINUOUSLY.

RICHARD, November 2007
Fantastic post Stefan thanks. Cured the same problem i had with my BDW15.

Thanks again

Terry, November 2007
Had this problem with a BW13, it is very simple to fix - and even prevent. On the base of the unit - ( underneith the kitchn plinth) there are 2 balck plastic clip panels - eash these of with a blunt knive or screw driver and turn off the appliance at the mains. In there you will see lots of wiring etc. Simply get a dish cloth and mop up any wate that is in there, particularly at the back left as that is where the sensor that detects the over flow is. Its simply a rubber valve that is boyent and so lifts when water is present. then once most of the water is removed, turn on - DONE ! easy as that - just remeber to replace the panels.

TO PREVENT THIS HAPPENING - when you take off the kitchen plinth you will see 2 small clear pipes in the centre - between the 2 plastic panels. These are cable tied. Simple cut the cable tie and feed the pipes out of the dishwasher - place a bowl under tehre if you whish. This will prevent overfloww water enterin the base. BE WARNED BY DOING THIS THE DISHWASHER WILL NOT HAVE ANY OVERFLOW PROTECTION CAUSING POSSIBLE DAMAGE TO KITCHEN AND APPLIANCE. My advice would be to leave it in place but try to prevent overflow - i.e rinse plates first or try a different brand of wash tablets. If it does happen then the fix is simple and you definately do not have to remove the unit as many people imply.

I hope this helps

Stefan Liversidge, August 2007
I decided against drilling a drain hole in the end.

There are two black plastic covers on the front of the base of the machine, so I decided that it was easy enough to get a sponge in and mop out the sump when it happens. The covers are hard to flip out, but a simple modification with a file has made them more readily removable for mopping out. That's nearly as easy as emptying a drip dray.

And I found the level sensor that causes the E4 error. Its at the middle front of the sump pan, and consists of a polystyrene foam float that trips a microswitch. it only needed a small (say 3mm) movement to operate.

All back in place and working again.

Hope this info helps others.....

The following is for search engines...
Baumatic Error Code E4
Baumatic Error E4
Baumatic E4 Error
BDW45 Error

Dave, June 2007
Now I'm going to take that last post back - It definately IS the water in the catch-tray that causes the error. I guess the first time I tested this, it must have taken a while to reach the sensor, or for the sensor to work, possibly because the water I used the first time was from the sump, and therefore wasn't "clean" and not sensed as effectively as clean water.

I have put clean water in, got the error, took it out, no error, put water in again, and got the error back. I have done this several times to prove the point.

Now, what can be done about it ?

1. Stop the pan filling with water.
That's not an easy task. There certainly doesn't appear to be any leaks in the wash drum, pipework, or any other obvious places. One possibility is the "vents" in both sides of the wash drum. These allow steam to escape into the void between wash drum and outer cabinet, which must surely condense somewhere, but these areas have a great wad of sound insulation in them. Although I can't see any evidence of moisture on it at all.

2. Move the sensor.
Perhaps the sensor (when I find where it is !!) is set too low, it only takes about a cupful of water to activate the error sensor. Obviously the water in the sump will evaporate in time, but if the machine is used daily, I'm not sure allowing a bigger catchment will solve the problem, only the same omount of water willl evaporate each day.

3. Drill a hole in the pan to let the water out.
This might not be such a daft idea. At least I could put a substantial "drip tray", say a large flat tupperware dish under the machine. I could certainly get to that to empty it weekly a damn sight easier than taking the machine out to tip it up!

I think weighing things up - I'm going to go for option 3, drill a hole in the sump. I'd rather be lifting out a tupperware dish regularly than de-installing the dishwasher !!

Hope this helps....

Dave, June 2007
I should have said "so I am fairly certain water in the spillage sump is NOT responsible".

Dave, June 2007
I'm not too sure that water in the catch-tray (sump) at the bottom of the machine is the problem. This error has plagued me since I had the dishwasher, and I've tried all the suggested remedies, eg. tipping, soaking out the salt container, pouring a cup of water in the base when gurgling, etc. etc.

Today I removed the dishwasher carefully, maing sure not to lose any collected water in the bottom sump. Sure enough still had the error. Then I tipped the machine as described into a tray, put it into a jug. By now the error had gone, so I put back what I collected, still no error, then I put back at least TWICE as much again, with still no error !.. In fact I can't even see any sensor in the sump that might detect this spillage, so I am fairly certain water in the spillage sump is responsible.

I am continuing to investigate, and will post more info if and when I have it.

Dave, June 2007
thanks for the tip, I tipped it back after disconnecting the water supply and it now works a treat. I was a bit worried as I had bought the machine in England and taken it to France where its difficult to get service engineers to work on machines bought in other countries.

Gwen, June 2007
thanks for the advice, pulled the dishwasher out (watch out boys and girls, the legs on these things are not very strong) tipped it on its back legs and sorted!

One word of advice, before you pull it out make sure there are no wires and pipes that will be snagged by the feet. When the Baumatic engineer came around a couple of years ago he pulled the dishwasher out and split a water pipe which flooded our new kitchen floor!

Mark, Surrey, January 2007
thanks....i just emptied the salt and soaked out the water with kitchen towel and that sorted it :)

I get this problem so many times, nice to know i know what to do .

Stu, December 2006
What I did is

put a towel in the salt despenser to drain all the water out (or as near as damn it)

then switch it on and wait till it gurgles

then put a small cup of water down the gurgling drain

leave it switched on for a few seconds

turn it off. turn it back on and problem solved.

it took about 10 min and saved £75

I had fault code e4 [overfill].i tipped machine on corner with drain pipe lowered. this removed water in base of machine and lets overfill switch to reset. machine works ok

DAVE MCKENZIE, September 2006
Roy you are a star, we had same error tried your trick and its now working fine - glad I came across this page with your advice!!

Claire, April 2006
Thanks Roy. Machine is working fine again.

David, March 2006
Hi, Just had a similar problem with the Baumatic BDW45. Error E4 Overfill. Rang Baumatic who told me that no parts were required, simply needed resetting and the charge would be £70 minimum.
Anyhow, this worked for me.....
Tipped, the dishwasher slightly on its back corner and water ran onto the kitchen floor. About 2-3 cups full came out. Once upright, all worked fine. Try it, you've nothing to lose!
