How can I fix a rip in a seat? ?

How can I repair a rip in a church pew without taking anything apart? If I fuse it first then sew around it, will it come apart easily when someone sit on it?

there is a great powder which you iron and holds material together, but you have to have a piece of material the same colour to place under the tear, if you cant get your fingers under the tear use a toothpick to manipulate it into position then the add the powder and iron over and it wont rip any further, i think you can buy the powder in kleeneze magazine or betterware, sometimes the big supermarkets have sewing accessories stocked
