i have a peoguot 106 and when i stop at lights junctions etc it splutters ?

hey i have a peogout 106 and when i stop at lights junctions etc it splutters revs high and nearly cut out it sometimes smell of petrol, this proplem doesnt happen all the time but is getting worse thanks.
