mondeo mk2 tickover fault?

my mk2 mondeo (S reg) suddenly lost power and the tickover jumps from 500 to 1500 RPM. ive replaced the HT leads as this seemed the sensible option, but the problem is still there.

no management light comes on and the car idles without cutting out. it sounds like misfire, but i dont know anything else.

help!

Sounds like it may be a problem with vacuum pipes linked to and around the inlet manifold. Need to check that these pipes are not split or damaged or it will pull too much air in giving loss of power and erratic tickover. Also may be worth checking the MAF (mass air flow) sensor. This is located between the air filter and the plenum chamber.
