How to delete viruses from USB stick ?

In days gone by antivirus software could kill viruses on floppies as they did not interact with HDD when inserted into PC, however I am not so confident that USB sticks do not interact with the HDD as soon as they are inserted.

I need this file as it represents 8 years of work.
