Refitting Tailgate Gas Struts?

I removed my tailgate gas struts to get replacements and now I can't remember which way they went round.
What I mean is does the main body of the strut fit to the tailgate or does it fit to the body of the car.
I hope I have explained myself.
Thank You.

It depends on the model of car. Whichever way you do it, make sure you close the tailgate slowly the first time, just in case you've got it wrong and something catches.

I don't think the Gas Strut cares...

On my little car the main body attaches to the bodywork and the sliding shaft to the tailgate - they get inverted as the back door opens.
