hOW CAN I FIX MALFUNCTION AS FOLLOWS?

Model Toshiba L350/L350D 17 INCH
When I turn on laptop it immediately goes to enter password screen which tells me it is locked. I switch user and then it tells me "Logged on" and I type in my password... it then gives me my desk top with accompanying icons and the Toshiba Recovery window. However when I click on to the OK button it does not disappear (as it normally does). I try to get into my computer... then get the drop down menu but cannot open as the cursor will not open it.. only by right-clicking... then nothing will register with the cursor. The only way away from these screens is to turn off manually. Any suggestions as to what has happened?
