Kawasaki PY90 kids crosser, semi auto gear selection?

For selection of 1st gear, should the selector be pressed down, with the remaining 3 gears being upwards?
Was told when I bought the bike to click up for all gears. Not used a semi automatic before, and cant seem to get the knack of knocking it in 1st without the bike lunging forward and stalling?? Need any revs or none at all when knocking into 1st?
Cant engage any gear by pressing the selector down, but dont know if this is due to all gears being selcted up, or if 1st gear just not working/engaging.
Would appreciate any advice. Bought the bike for the kids xmas, but not sure they will be able to use it!!

Nuetrals at the top all gears are down the way. No revs when selecting 1st gear once in gear pull the throttle and go it's that easy

i had one a while ago and seem to think it was all the way up for neutral and the other 4 gears were down starting with 1st obviously.they are a very strange engine they use the bottom end of a honda syle engine and the top end of a yamaha t80 engine the pistons are exaclty the same a t80 aswell but they townmate 80 has a shorter stroke which is why its 80cc and not 90cc.my one burned oil badly so i rebored it myself and put a new .50 oversized piston in it.
