petrol smell from my air vent?

when i put the heating on in my vauxhall zafira 1800 (2001)model there is a strong smell of petrol could this be the choke as it only happens during the colder months if so what can i do?

are you sure it's petrol? it could be coolant( & anti freeze) leaking from the heater.
