I updated hardware drivers at Microsoft?

two updates were ok..a 3rd was listed for my sound card but the update site says the update wasn't performed but I now have no sound

going to device manager I get mmc.exe not found so I can get into the device manager..I tried to reinstall driver via my drivers disk but still no sound..
