How to connect to ethernet modem?

I recently installed win98 on an old compaq presario 4540 pc which has a nic card installed. I installed the driver for it, and the lights come on when I plug the ethernet cable in, but I can not get it to connect. What are the specific steps to get it to recognize the modem, I even installed the drivers for the modem to work on the usb port, but no luck. Any help?

Proibaly something to do with addressing. I'm not an expert at cable modems but in order to atalk across an Ethernet, your PC needs an IP address. Does you cable modem suply DHCP or do you need to put a fixed address in your networking setup - the handbook that came with your modem will tell you. BTW. If you are using Ethernet, you ARE networking - Local Area (Network)ing.

I have a cable modem and I'm not trying to network or anything, I just plug it in, and I also tried to use the usb to connect, without success. I'm just not sure if I have all the settings configured correctly. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
