How can I fix my Hotpoint VTD20 tumble dryer?

I have a Hotpoint VTD20 Tumble dryer. Ever since we purchased it, we've had problems and now it doesn't work at all. The heater element don't last at all, their made of crappy paper material which easily overheats and tears, which has lead to a new element. This causes the thermostat to trip, so I keep having to reset it. However, now which you press the start button in the dryer does start spinning an the power light comes on, but when you take your finger off the start button the whole thing stops working. So in effect you would have to stand there holding the power button down for it to work. Anyone have any ideas what this may be?
