On my Golf the winding gear came pre assembled on a metal plate - pulley wheels, brackets and winding cables £50 or so.

Someone may be able to help you but you fail to mention the Make, Model or year of your vehicle...

with no info of the car i am trying to work on i would remove the PASSENGER side door panel and WATCH the operation of this one ( up/down) . would then compare and see whats happening to the drivers side and why
usually door glass has come out of the slide
