Vauxhall Corsa Auto - Internal gearbox fault?

My Corsa has been displaying an "F" and wil not start- I had to be towed home. I am told that this is an internal gearbox fault. Does anyone know exactly what may have caused this and how much it would cost to fix?

The computer will need to be code read as the 'F' light is on. This should provide a clue to the problem. If the engine cranks over Its not the range switch or wires going to it.
