From the symptoms you probably have the DPO box. The transmission WILL need an overhaul. The filter is blocked with debris. When it has sucked up till it can't pick up any more Drive and Reverse is lost. Switching off for a while allows the filter to back flush slightly enabling drive again. There is a remote possibility that it has aireated fluid caused by over/under filling. It will not drive on air. So check level first. see other posts for procedure. Check out www.fedauto.co.uk

Don't even think about a new gearbox yet, look for a local garage that specializes in automatic gearboxes and ask them to diagnose the fault as it may only require transmission fluid top-up,just tell them the problem and they will find the fault,DO NOT suggest to them that you think you need a new gearbox,it will cost you the earth, advise is cheap or free.Look in your local Yellow Pages it will be quicker and easier trust-me.
