head gasket problem?

is a head gasket the same as a cylinder head gasket mine appears to have blown on a rover 416si 97-98

Check and replace the O rings where the inlet manifold meets the cylinder head while you've got it apart. They perish, let coolant out, and the resultant overheating is a main cause of head gasket failure.
If you replace the head gasket but not the O rings then all of your hard work could well be in vain as the head gasket could blow again.
