First the water is let in and splashed around - then the water gets heated up and splashed around - then the detergent door is opened etc.
I would guess that the first few minutes are OK and then, when the heating element is energised, you get the trip because of a short to ground in the element.
The machine will not have emptied the water if stopped mid cycle - it will empty only after washing and again after rinsing which both happen later.
I have no special knowledge of household appliances and am just guessing as usual - it may not be the element - it may be the detergent door solenoid.
