how do you get a jones vx860 to do a straight stitch

Yes it does - select 1 on the big round dial (front right).
Then select stitch width to 0 ( top left) and stitch length ( top right to whatever length you want to choose!

Hello Sue,
I can't remember if you have dials or levere, I think you have dials, you should have straight stitch on the pattern dial and then put the stitch length dial on 0 and then select your stitch length, if it helps you can email a picture to clarify things, type my address as you say it not as you read it.
