Main beam headlights on my Renault Clio 1.2i RL 1996 will not work!

I can flash the beam with the side lights on or off. When the headlights are on dipped, I can neither turn on or flash the main beam for some reason.

There doesn't seem to be any switch position to turn the main beam on, only to flash it by pulling the switch bar forward.

Any ideas how to get my main beam headlights working?

I can't help, but I can sympathise! I discovered this evening my main beams won't work either, even though they were working fine on Monday! I've checked the fuses and they're not the problem, and I doubt it's the bulbs as it seems a bit odd for two bulbs to go simultaneously. Also, when I pull the stalk in to switch on main beam, it usually clicks and has some resistance, but now there's nothing - it's like having a sausage attached to the steering wheel! I'm taking my damned Clio (baptism of fire that car is!) to Renault tomorrow and see if they can fix it...I'm not looking forward to the cost!
