how do I get the piston back into the cylinder?

I am replacing the brake pads on the rear of my 1.8 Zafira Design. I have the special tool to wind the piston back into the cylinder but I cannot get the nearside one to screw in.
I have done the offside, no probs?
Is there a technique to getting the piston back?

try pushing piston whilst turning it so that it engages into gear to wind back piston
