Whats that noise ??

I have been looking for a new car, namely a landrover discovery, I have seen a cheap 300 tdi that im interested in. When the engine was started it sounded a little tappety ?? Would it be the actual tappets I can here ? or would it more likely be something else. If I bought the vehicle and it was the tappets would it be a case of just adjusting the tappets, or is this a common fault leading to more expense ?????

The 300TDI Land Rover engine does not have hydraulic tappets, they can sound noisy when cold.
Adjustment is easy, can be done hot or cold at 0.20 mm. Also check push rods are straight.

you cant tell what noises are what on a cold diesel ! give it a good run up the road for at least half an hour. it could be expensive ! but they do not run quiet like some newer diesels.

if the vehicle was cold when you started it then what you heard was indeed the tappets .witch are hydrualic this means they are fed by the oil system when the oil pressure comes up the tappety sound should stop if it does not then walk away lots of money is required to fix
