Replacing the belt on VDT20P?

On first inspection on the tumbe dryer had clearly snapped; replaced belt with a recommend belt from the manufacturer.
The problem that I am experiencing is that because the belt is tensioned I can't stretch the belt far enough to put it on the motor spindle. Do you have any suggestions to make it slightly easier? Currently I am using a wooden dowel and gently turning it but I am literally 3/4" away from it going on the spindle.

I REPLACED A NEW BELT ONLY YESTERDAY AND I USED A PIECE OF TUBING PLACE TUBE ON THE BELT AND PLACE END OF TUBING OVER SPINDLE AT AN ANGLE LEVER DOWN AND BELT WILL SLIDE ONTO SPINDLE GOOD LUCK.
P.S.ALSO CHECK REAR DRUM BEARING AS THIS COULD BE THE CAUSE OF BELT BREAKING
