why is the steering heavy on my citroen xantia?

When i start up my citroen xantia on a cold morning i allow the suspension to rise up then as i drive away the steering is very very heavy. It gets better the longer i drive...what is causing this?

sounds like the hydraulic pump is lazy (on its way out) or poss accumulator sphere lost all its presure. try Plieades in Sawtry, cambs, they will completely rebuild yr hyd pump for about £100 or exchange it, fairly common on these cars with 100k or more, easy to change too and certainly worth doing, u will also find that the steering can can be a little heavier on very cold mornings due to consistency of the lhm fluid but should ease off after a minute or so once it is circulating the system. try changing the lhm fluid (should be done every 3yrs)

Hi, recently had similar prob, high pressure pump can leak and cause this. Mine was down to a universal joint on steering shaft near where it goes onto steering rack.
I did a little research and found it a common problem.

PS if it is the steering pump I bought one and did not need it so could sell it for what I paid for it.

Best wishes Pete
