Valve setting?

I have a B&S 14.5 OHV mod.287707 type 0225-01 code 941213 1A the muffler gets red hot, to the point of melting the front tire & the plastic on the hood. wondering if the valves could have any thing to with the problem? If so what do they set at?how much trouble is it to fix? thanks Steve at sjchubb2001@yahoo.com

It's just running too lean for some reason.
I'm thinking a carb rebuild may be in order.
If you want to check the valve clearences they are:
.003-.005 for the Intake
.005-.007 for the Exhaust
Check them with the piston 1/4" past top dead center on the compression stroke.

a new air filter, new spark plug in case the one that was in it wasn't the right temperture,a new muffler , what else ya think it might be?

How does it run other than the overheated exhaust?
Usually that means it's running too lean. Is the air filter clean?
