Engine Cooling system on my car?

Hi
my car is a old honda civic with a edited 2.0 engine but with this new engine ive ocoured a problem, im quite a boy racer but when i do go for a long distance journey or if i have a quick drag, my engine tempriture goes Way abouve normal and i have to shut the engine off for like an hr for it to cool, any ideas ?

it sounds like the thermostat, basicly, the water flows around the engine and then pases through the thermostat, if the water isnt hot enough it sends it back round the engine 1 more time, when it reaches 100 degreas the thermostat opens to let the water through to cool in the radiator so basicly your thermostat is stuck closed so the water cant cool
