how many lambda sensors?

Hey , i have a yr 2000 mk 4 golf 1.4 s and need to change the lambda sensor but unsure if theirs more than one!! does any one know how i can find out how many it has and will i need any special tools to remove/re-fit the sensor !! regards...paul

thanx nigel altough im finding it hard to aquire new sensors as im trying to get them cheap!! mate what is the likely hood that they will both need changin and how would i be able to tell which one/both are dead?? do you think i could just clean them??

Hi Paul, there are two sensors one before the "cat" and the other after it, they will probably be seized into the fitting, so you will need a blowtorch/aceteleyne torch to free them off, you can buy a specially modified socket that allows the cable to remain in place, but if you are replacing it you can just cut the cable off and use a normal socket (most are around 22~28mm) when fitting the new one put plenty of anti-seize grease (copperslip will work) on the threads, the sensor should be torqued to 50Nm, this is where the special socket is needed!
