clean all of it,i would personally take the variator totally off and disassemble it and wash it all in a tub of petrol with a stiff brush, then dry it and grease the roller ramps the 3 sliding guides that are plastic and stop the steel plate on the backlof the variator eating into the ally part that the rollers sit in,also grease the steel spacer thats the variator slide back and forth on and the inside on the brass/bronze bush/dont go mad witht the grease just a thin coating and make sure you wipe any excess from the faces the belt runs on .try to clean the whole area inside the engine where the belt runs as the rubber dust just causes problems in the end kickstarts jam and the transmission struggles, cleaning wont hurt it.
