how to set the timing on 18hp (42" cut) craftsman riding mower?

I ran over some guy wire hidden under leaves, it killed the mower. It was wrapped loosley around both blades. Got it undone easily, mower turns like it wants to start but it wont. Did it shear the key, if so, how do I set the timing after I replace the key? What else could be wrong if it isnt the key? I have replaced the key in my tillers a couple of times and it wasnt too hard to do. Is it going to be harder to do on the riding mower?

It may have sheared the key. It's uncomman to happen that way with a mower deck getting bound up, but it is possible.
There is no timing to set. The key times the spark.
The only difference in replacing the key on a larger engine is the flywheel nut has to be torqued tighter. Approching 150Ft/Lbs

I want to add this to my previous question. After I untangled the wire, I tried to start the mower a couple of times and it wouldnt start. Then on the last try it did start. I let it run about 30 seconds and shut it off. When I tried to restart it.....it still wont start, just turns round and round with no idea about starting.
