craftsman riding mowers 42" and 46" are the rear ends compatible?

I have two craftsman riding mowers and both have different size engines but, both are 6 speeds. Can I put the rear end of the 42" on the 46"?

Most Peerless gear boxes have the same hole spacings, the only issue may be the linkages, i would say it can be done with a little altering of rods etc.
