My Hotpoint DF61 dishwasher is suddenly using huge quantities of salt?

My Hotpoint DF61 dishwasher is suddenly using huge quantities of salt which is causing poor cleaning and salty deposits on everyting. Presumably it's to do with the softener..? I would appreciate any advice please.
