Hotpoint First Edition 1000 - Pumps but no spin or wash?

My Hotpoint First Edition (WM53) powers up, but when put on the normal wash cycle fills up with water (first from the powder dispenser) but will not do the usual turning around and subsequent wash. I can move the dial on, but same again - water is pumped out but no spin. The knob turns at certain points during the cycle, but seems to stick elsewhere. The knob (and control unit?) seems to click when in the "stuck" mode. Any ideas anyone?

If you want to do it yourself you will have to take the motor out and change the brushes.
Its the cheapest option and usually the correct one.
I had the same problem last year on my Siemens model and had problems getting spares due to machine 10 yrs old.
Had to make do with compatible brushes.
It's happened again so I'm looking for something new.
