Are you guys talking about the fuel banjo with the stop solenoid at the rear of the pump, or the banjo on the end of the fuel line that goes to the front right hand side ( between the pump and the engine block?

we have nissan cabstar yr 2001 and keep having this same fault occuring is it a common problem with this vehicle? its costing a fortune at the garage to keep having this gauze thing blow out, priced up a new fuel pump and it was nissan only and was £2000. it runs fine for a while and then suddenly goes it cant be trusted to go far. the man who took the guaze out and chucked it away did it still go alright or did it knacker something else like the injectors? need some help this vehicle has only got 56,000 on the clock and is brilliant otherwise

I had the same problem, lots of white/blue smoke and a misfire at half revs plus. The problem was indeed the small gauze filter under the main fuel inlet pipe, this is found on the top of the fuel pump at the the cooling fan end of the engine. You need to remove the drivers seat, (just two nuts under the drivers seat) then move the gear lever and cover to one side (no need to disconnect cables) and remove the engine cover plate, then move the power steering tank out of the way (again, no need to disconnect it but the front bolt is a real fiddle!) clean arround the banjo bolt before removing it. Hook the visible spring out with a hook made of wire and the tiny gauze filter also. Blow all the rubbish out of the filter and re-install (it's there to protect your fuel pump!)

Hey presto no more smoke, and loads of power!

Gaz, I'm very grateful for the advise.

sounds just like the problem i've got, however was your engine management on as mine seems to be on and off randomly??

i had a y reg cabstar the other day smoking like mad when reved up, on the top of the main pump near to the front take the bandjo bolt out of the main fuel feed pipe move the pipe to the side there is a spring inside the pump pull it out, then with a thin welding rod bend put a small hook on the end and have a poke around in the hole you will pull a very small fillter out throw it as far as you can replace the pipe and bandjo and presto fault sorted.
