Fuel hose quick release fittings, citroen xsara picasso 2.0 hdi..how do you?

Help... how are you meant to get the quick release fuel hose fittings off please... it says use a small screwdriver, but I'm afraid of damaging them...do you push hard with the screwdriver and pull???
