how to use sub total functuion on er4940 samsung cash register?

when trying to enter prices using the number key pad,then hitting sub total,i get e-1 error code.is there a way to fix this.the machine came from a highschool surpluss sale,and we got it for our special needs son,and we just need the basic functions on it to work.we have a set-up manual,but its not a lot of help!
