the exhaust gas monitoring light will come on because the engine is misfiring. a reasonably common fault is HT leads. easy way to check is when it's dark outside. lift bonnet and peek under the alloy inlet manifold where you can just see the HT leads. after time the insulation on lead 1 or 2 breaks up a little and all being well, you'll see little blue sparks of the lead arc-ing out on the engine. you'll need to remove the inlet manifold to slap new leads on but then you can get back to tearing up the local traffic!
