I took my nissan micra into a garage last October for a gear box problem. they said they could fix it and quoted £830. I paid them as they said they needed it for the parts.
This week they told me the car is not repairable and a new gear box would cost £2,000 which I do not have. What is my position. Could they not have told me that last October when they looked at the car? They also told me today it will cost me more if they fix it. They also said it is in pieces and cannot be moved. Can anyone advise me what to do?.

was it a written estimate that you got if not its your word against theirs either way i would get on to the local trading standards they may have heard about this bunch before

Last October??? Have you got the original quote for the £830 in writing, if so, it'll be a good start. I think you need to take it along to Citizens Advice or a solicitor who specialises in this sort of problem and tell them what you've written here. Also the garage might see sense once they know you're serious. Good luck.
