My diesel motor stuck on high revs blowing smoke?

I have a Nissan TD27 diesel motor and it made a slight clattering noise. I pulled over and when I put it in neutral the revs shot up to 3.5 and I turned the motor off and it kept going. It blew heaps of black smelly smoke and slowly wound down after 2 mins and stopped. What on earth caused this. Had no previous problems with it.

Thanks but it isn't a turbo model, the oil was 3 quarters full

Either the turbo seals failed or the engine was over-filled with oil, which would have the same effect.

sounds like your turbo oil seals have gone and engine ran on oil take inlet pipe off from tubo intercooler and see if cooler and pipe full of oil if so need turbo recon or replaced
